Camphor Tree

Cinnamomum camphora

The Camphor Tree is a native tree of Hong Kong, and can grow up to 30 metres tall. It has a dense canopy, and the bark features longitudinal cracks. The leaves are oval with undulated margins. The flowers are small and yellowish-white. The fruits are small berries that turn deep purple when mature.

The whole plant of the Camphor Tree is scented. It is full of camphor oil, which can be extracted and used as an insect repellent and for medical purposes. The wood is used for furniture making because of its insect-repelling properties.
